Though not soldiers, the civilians of the 30th OVI are a vital part of the unit. While women were not often found in the military camps during the Civil War, we have found that demonstrating the role that civilians played during the war is vital, as the success of the army depended on so many who were not actively fighting but supported the war through contributions and sacrifice. These impressions include nurses, washer women, and cooks in the camps as well as civilian daily life in the civilian camps or “towns”.
Civilians staying in an authentic civilian camp or visiting the military camp at an event are expected to maintain a period correct appearance and deportment when the camp is open to the public. Civilian women should have male escorts when visiting the military camp. Historically accurate clothing styles from the early to mid 1860’s should be worn. Modern clothing and equipment are discouraged unless effectively concealed in tents and away from the eyes of the public.
Before making purchases check with our Civilian Mentors to ensure that you are not wasting money on inaccurate or incorrect clothing! We do not recommend that you make a mad dash to the “Sutlers” to get outfitted. Much of the items sold there are overpriced, historically inaccurate, and poorly made. Our links provided on this website as well as our members can direct you to better sources!

Many great articles have been written about civilian wardrobes and reenacting so instead of reinventing the wheel we have provided links to helpful articles that may help provide guidance on what is needed for a basic wardrobe!
